10 Non-Hormonal Birth Control Methods
Hormonal birth control is perfectly safe for most women, and it may even have health perks: The Pill, for example, has been shown to lower your risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer, says Eve Espey, MD, chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of New Mexico. But if the hormonal methods make you feel lousy—maybe you've noticed mood swings or a dampened sex drive—or you'd just rather avoid them, other options abound. Here are 10 to explore and discuss with your doctor.
The method: Male condom
How to use it: Made of thin latex or plastic, condoms are worn on the penis during intercourse.
Effectiveness: Pretty good if you use them correctly; only 2 women out of 100 will get pregnant if they always use condoms perfectly. Not so perfect? About 18 out of 100 women will get pregnant in a year with typical use.
The good: They're simple to use, inexpensive, widely available, and protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
The bad: The failure rate is high, and they can make sex feel less spontaneous. "Plus, some people can't stand the way they feel," says Espey. It's also worth noting that you or your partner could be allergic to latex.
The method: Female condom
How to use it: Not as popular as the male condom, the female condom is a plastic pouch that's inserted into the vagina right before intercourse. It has flexible rings at the ends—one at the closed end keeps it in place while the ring at the open end stays outside of the vagina during sex.
Effectiveness: Similar rate to the male condom—about 79% effective with typical use. The good: It's woman controlled, and it prevents STIs.
The bad: "It's a project," says Espey. "Sometimes you can feel it, and it tends to move during intercourse." Also, it can irritate your vagina or your partner's penis.

6 Things The Color Of Your Period Blood Says About Your Health
6 Things The Color Of Your Period Blood Says About Your Health
Your period can tell you a lot about your health. In fact, last year the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published a report recommending that it be viewed as a vital sign the same way your blood pressure, pulse, and temperature are. Why? Because in addition to telling you whether you're pregnant or not, your period can provide key insights into your hormone health—and your hormones keep everything from your brain to your reproductive system running smoothly.
While what's normal for one woman may not be normal for another, there are a few changes you should watch out for, particularly when it comes to the color of your flow. Below, find 6 things your period blood is trying to tell you about your health.
If it’s pinkish…
You may have low estrogen levels. Especially if it's accompanied by a lighter-than-usual flow, or if you're an avid runner, says New York-based functional medicine nurse practitioner Margaret Romero. Studies have found that excessive exercise can lower estrogen levels, which can subsequently mess with your period, sometimes causing it to disappear altogether. (It's not uncommon for female professional athletes to stop ovulating.)
While this may not seem like a big deal (who hasn't fantasized about never having to deal with a period at least once or twice?), low estrogen levels can increase your risk of osteoporosis if left untreated. So if you've recently started training for a marathon, have started working out for the first time in your life, or have upped the intensity of your workouts and you notice that your periods are suddenly lighter in color and flow or less frequent, talk to your doctor.
Romero says other potential culprits of a pinkish flow can include poor nutrition, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or perimenopause, which is when your ovaries start producing less estrogen in preparation for menopause (generally, it occurs around four to five years before menopause).

6 Autoimmune Diseases That Mess With Your Weight
6 Autoimmune Diseases That Mess With Your Weight
Autoimmune diseases happen when your body's immune system starts attacking its own organs, tissues, and cells. Although they're on the rise, they're also tricky to diagnose. Symptoms can creep up slowly, and many of them—like achy joints, fatigue, and tummy troubles—overlap with other disorders.
But there's one symptom that many autoimmune diseases share: weight changes. "Almost everyone with an autoimmune disorder has it affect their weight one way or the other," says Mark Engelman, MD, a clinical consultant for Cyrex Laboratories, a clinical lab specializing in functional immunology.
So if the number on the scale suddenly goes up or down with no good explanation, take stock of whether you've experienced any other weird, nagging symptoms, and talk to your doctor if you think an autoimmune disease could be to blame. While Engelman notes that just about any autoimmune disease can affect your weight to some extent, here are a few of the most common culprits.
Type 1 diabetes
Of the 29 million Americans who have diabetes, only around 1.25 million have type 1, which occurs when the immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. (Type 2 diabetes, the more common form, is not considered an autoimmune illness.) Because insulin plays a key role in how your body uses and stores glucose for energy, many people with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes experience unexplained weight loss. If you're having any other symptoms—like excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, or blurred vision—talk to a doctor.

7 Autoimmune Diseases Every Woman Should Know About
7 Autoimmune Diseases Every Woman Should Know About
Autoimmune diseases—which occur when the immune system turns on you and starts attacking healthy cells—can impact anyone, but almost 80% of people who have them are women. No one knows exactly why, but recent research suggests that it may have to do with differences in the way certain genes are expressed in females. Whatever the cause, it's especially bad news since autoimmune illnesses are on the rise. "In the past 50 years, the incidence of autoimmunity in the US has tripled," reports Amy Myers, MD, author of The Autoimmune Solution.
There are at least 80 different autoimmune diseases. Though each one is unique, many share hallmark symptoms, such as fatigue, dizziness, and low-grade fever; the classic sign is inflammation, which can cause redness, heat, pain, and swelling (these 6 autoimmune diseases can mess with your weight). Treatment depends on the disease, but it often includes anti-inflammatory medications, drugs that suppress the immune system, or newer biologic agents that either mimic substances normally produced by the body or block other substances that are part of the immune system, says Howard Smith, MD, a rheumatologist and director of the Lupus Clinic at Cleveland Clinic.
Natural strategies are also gaining traction, including reducing inflammatory foods like those high in sugar and saturated fat, reducing stress, lowering your burden of toxins, and healing your gut. As Myers notes, 80% of you immune system is located in your gut.
Catching autoimmune diseases early is the best way to slow their progression, but you need to know what to look for. Read on for the scoop on 7 of the most common ones:

8 Styling Mistakes That Are Making You Lose Your Hair
8 Styling Mistakes That Are Making You Lose Your Hair
Everybody sheds. In fact, most people lose around 50-100 hairs per day, so it's normal to lose a few strands while you're in the shower, brushing your hair, or styling your locks. That said, your hair shouldn't be coming out in handfuls; if it is, talk to your doctor, since you might have an iron deficiency, hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, lupus, or alopecia. A receding hairline or widening part could also be caused by stress, post-pregnancy hormone shifts, or genetics.
But there's another factor you might not have considered: your styling habits. Yes, that's right: Something you're doing in an attempt to make your hair look better could actually be making it much, much worse. Below, Danielle Allyson, stylist at Butterfly Studio Salon in New York, shares 8 surprising styling mistakes to avoid.
Heat styling your hair without any protection
Curling or straightening your hair without first applying a protective product is a surefire way to dry out the cuticle of your hair and end up with fried, thinning locks. To give your hair a break, always use a heat protectant spray or serum (try TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray), and don't heat-style your hair more than twice a week.
Brushing your hair too often
Excessive combing or brushing strains your scalp, which can cause breakage and hair loss, so Allyson recommends brushing only once in the morning and once at night.
"Unless you have extremely tangled hair, there's no need to brush more often," she says. If you do consistently struggle with tangled hair, try gently combing with conditioner in the shower or use a detangling spray (such as Oribe Run-Through Detangling Primer) on damp hair afterward.

6 Ways Your Selfie Obsession Is Affecting Your Health
6 Ways Your Selfie Obsession Is Affecting Your Health
You probably have one of three very distinct selfie personalities. You either detest them (you'd never take one, let alone post one on social media), you take so many selfies you give Kim K. a run for her money, or you swear you're not that kind of person...but sometimes snap 'em on the sly.
We don't mean to be the selfie police (selfie sticks, on the other hand...), but they're not always the harmless photo op you might think. Here is a handful of ways selfies actually affect your health.
They draw out your narcissistic side.
We know it's not called anti-social media, but posting too many selfies isn't necessarily putting your best foot forward. In a 2014 Ohio State University study of 1,000 men, researchers found that guys who posted more selfies also ranked higher on scales of narcissism and psychopathy. Now, the selfie-takers were still in the normal range of these undesirable traits—but there are better sides of you to display, we're sure of it.
Selfies could seriously endanger you.
While you're busy perfecting your duck face, you might be putting yourself directly in harm's way. Selfie-snappers have died—yes, died—pursuing the perfect pic a top tall buildings, hanging off bridges, and toeing the edges of cliffs. Is it really worth it?!

From Perky To Sagging - Why This Has Happened To Your Boobs
From Perky To Sagging, Why This Has Happened To Your Boobs
Let me be clear from the outset …. there is nothing you can do to return your twins to the way they were in your 20s or 30s …. or even early 40s. Even breast lift surgery results are not permanent, because the breast skin and ligaments will stretch again eventually.
Sagging breasts is a natural, inevitable process that happens to all women at some point, except to women with fairly small breasts.
It is ironic that many women with small breasts dreamt of having bigger breasts when they were younger …. some may have even undergone breast augmentation procedures.
But their small breasts serve them well in menopause and beyond. Some women who enjoyed being well endowed when they were younger, complain that during menopause their boobs are so heavy that they have to hold them up when they walk around!
The purpose of this post is to help you to better understand what has happened to your boobs …. and why you now have sagging breasts. This may help you to free up
attention that may be fixed on your twins and what has happened to them. What your breasts consist of Breasts do not have muscle. They are made of Fat. The amount and distribution of fat determines the overall size and shape of breasts. When women are younger, their breasts have less fat and are mostly comprised.

PSA: You Can Bruise, Cut, and Tear Your Vagina
PSA: You Can Bruise, Cut, and Tear Your Vagina
And you should definitely know what to do if you get a down-there injury. Yeast infections, STDs, and ingrown hairs: Our lady parts are no strangers to unwanted, uncomfortable issues. And they’re not immune to injuries, either—we’re talking bumps, bruises, scrapes, and tears. Here, five ways you can hurt your hoo-ha (and what to do if you find yourself in a precarious situation):
You Can Bruise Your Vagina
When Jules Wainstein of Real Housewives of New York climbed through a window and wound up with a vaginal hematoma, we thought, a vaginal what? It turns out a hematoma is just a bruise, says Fahimeh Sasan, doctor of osteopathic medicine, an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. You might notice a bump, swelling, and black and blue—the result of blood collecting under the skin, she explains. But unless you’re straddling a windowsill a la Jules, such an injury is rare, since your lady parts are pretty well protected. “You’d really have to be doing something special to have this happen in everyday life,” says Sasan. A few real-life instances where it’s more common: intense mountain biking or childbirth, says Sasan. For the most part, though, the bruise will heal with a little bit of ice and time, she says.

Everything You Could Ever Possibly Want to Know About Your Period
Everything You Could Ever Possibly Want to Know About Your Period
Aunt Flo, that time of the month, the crimson wave—whatever you want to call it, your monthly visitor plays a big role in your daily life. But are you sure you know everything there is to know about your cycle? It turns out there are tons of ways menstruation can impact your body, mind, and, yep, even your hair. Need more deets?
We combed through 12 of the best articles on WomensHealthMag.com to bring you this CliffsNotes version of the most crucial facts about your period—from the history of how women have dealt over the years to whether synced up cycles are really a thing.
Sure, when you’re scrounging around your purse trying to find a quarter to buy a pad in a public bathroom, you feel like the entire world is against you. But that sounds a hell of a lot more convenient than in Biblical times, when women gathered in a red tent to wait out their periods. Let’s not even talk about the “period aprons” that women wore in the 1800s, which were akin to rubber diapers. Although, we’re not going to lie—we like the idea of what was done in the flapper-era, where ladies had to deposit money into a box to pay for their sanitary napkins instead of dealing with a clerk. (Boo for period shame, but yay for no lines!)

5 Facts Every Woman Should Know About Her Ovaries
5 Facts Every Woman Should Know About Her Ovaries
You might not give your ovaries much thought (unless you're trying to get pregnant), but even if you don’t think about them on the reg, these walnut-sized organs actually play a huge role in your every day life. "From a biological perspective, we’re put on the Earth to make more of us, so that kind of makes the ovaries one of our most important organs," says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the Yale School of Medicine. Here are five things you didn’t know about your best reproductive friends.
They Produce a Whole Lot of Hormones
Your ovaries secrete estrogen and progesterone, says Minkin. These two hormones are responsible for the development of the female body during puberty (think boob growth, your period, and the widening of your hips). Estrogen and progesterone also prep the uterus for conception—and not producing enough can lead to trouble getting pregnant. Plus, your ovaries churn out your body’s supply of testosterone (albeit in smaller amounts than the estrogen), which you can thank for your sex drive.

How Men REALLY Feel About Breast Implants
How Men REALLY Feel About Breast Implants
If you were paying attention this week, you may have caught some breaking boob news: Women who have breast implants report higher levels of sexual satisfaction, according to a Brazilian study.
I won’t pretend I know what it feels like to be a woman, but I do know what it feels like to feel a woman. And I’ve been privy to some men-only conversations about the female body. That gives me a certain kind of breast-pertise that I’d like to use to clear something up. So here it is: Most men don’t really care whether your breasts are real or fake.
What guys do care about? Your confidence, both in and out of bed. If you feel sexy, you’ll turn your partner on (in fact, this is just a hunch here, but maybe those women with implants who reported higher sexual satisfaction decided to get breast enhancements because they thought it would make them feel sexier—and it did, which affected their confidence levels and therefore their happiness in bed, too).
Want in on another secret? Men as a whole don’t even necessarily prefer larger breasts. Some guys do, sure, and there are plenty of women out there for them. But there are also plenty of men who would rather have a breast just big enough for them to cup. So if your breasts are small or large or fake or real—and, most importantly, you feel comfortable with them—you’re in the perfect position to have a happy sex life. Don’t change a thing. As long as you’re confident in your own bra and you enjoy sex, you’ll have no trouble finding an eager partner to ogle you in bed—boob job or not.

The 411 on everything boob-related: why you get sore breasts, the pros and cons of breast augmentation, and how to firm them up (a little) with exercise.
Fluid is leaking from my nipples, and I'm not pregnant. What gives?
It's not unusual for weird-looking stuff to drip from the nipples, says Dayna Salasche, M.D., an ob-gyn in Chicago. It can come in many colors—yellow, green, white, gray, red—and vary from thick and sticky to thin and watery. Non-pregnancy-related discharge can occur either spontaneously or from stimulation (e.g., squeezing or sucking) and is most often the result of a benign papilloma (a noncancerous tumor), an infection, or a drug side effect. In rare cases, leakage can signal a hormonal imbalance or even breast cancer, so if you're not knocked up, consult your doc.
Is it possible to breast-feed after having an augmentation?
Usually. Most breast implants don't interfere with feeding, says Todd Malan, M.D., director of the Innovative Cosmetic Surgery Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. However, 20 percent of implants need to be readjusted surgically within the first year, and about 30 percent rupture after a decade. So while the original procedure might not affect feeding, the more surgeries you have, the more ligament damage is done and the more your breasts will sag. If you decide to lift that droopiness with even more surgery, your milk ducts might get damaged, which would interfere with nursing. Long story short: Be sure your surgeon gives you all the details.

So instead of just coexisting with your girls, why not get to know them a little better? We rounded up 31 fun, silly, and smart ways to have a blast with your boobs. We promise, you’ll be besties before you know it.
Dress them up.
The best lingerie can take your pair from cute to Christina Hendricks (OK, not really, but you get the point). Find the sexiest style for your shape and don it undereverything from an LBD to your work clothes. Just think of it as a sexy secret between you and your girls.
Get them wet.
We’re not talking wet T-shirt contest—though that’s an option, too. Hot water brings your blood to the surface and raises your body temp, both of which make your skin super sensitive to the touch.
Lather them up.
Speaking of showers, here’s another reason to hop in right now: dry skin irritates your breasts (and makes them less fun to play with), so find a moisturizing body wash that will treat them right. Pick your favorite and slather it on.

Your Private Parts: A Lesson In Female Anatomy
Your Private Parts: A Lesson In Female Anatomy
Get to know your pink parts. Experts say it will improve your health and help you have better sex. So don't be shy.
Humor us for a sec:
If the average woman had a Facebook page for her private parts (we know, shut up), odds are her relationship status would be "it's complicated," and she'd desperately need to post a profile picture. After all, new research from the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University suggests that she hasn't checked herself out much—only 26 percent of women look closely at their lady bits. Hey, we get it. Guys have it so much easier. Their junk is hanging out there, just waiting to be experienced. Most of our parts are internal, so we can't exactly see what we're working with.
Well, here's some incentive to change all that: The more you make your vagina your business, the more pleasure you'll experience. In a separate study published in the International Journal of Sexual Health, scientists found that women who had a positive view of their genitals were more comfortable in their skin, more apt to orgasm, and more likely to experiment in bed. Ding-ding-ding rings the pleasure bell! In fact, just looking at your goodies can be a turn-on. "Research shows that seeing signs of sex helps inspire arousal and lubrication," says Debby Herbenick, Ph.D., a research scientist at Indiana University and the author of Because It Feels Good. So allow us to scroll down there, if you will, for a better view. Oh, and when we're done, you might want to update your status.

How to Know What Your Normal Boobs Feel Like
How to Know What Your Normal Boobs Feel Like
You notice when your chest is swollen, sore, or squeezed into a probably-too-tight bra, but do you know what your normal boobs feel like? According to a new campaign from the U.K. charity CoppaFeel (ha, get it?), that's actually really important information.
The breast cancer charity is specifically aimed at raising awareness in young adults and encouraging women to get to know what their "normal" feels like so that they'll know when something is up.
They're telling women to get to know their breasts using whatever language feels right and familiar to them. Aside from the lumps or puckering your gyno has reminded you to look for, they suggest using your own descriptive words, whether it's "doughy," "firm," or "spongey."
So it's not exactly scientific, but it drives home the message that self-checks are an important way to stay on top of your breast health and notice when something feels a little off.

7 Reasons Your Boobs Hurt
7 Reasons Your Boobs Hurt
When your girls get tender and don't-touch-me sore, yes, it's annoying, but it's generally no cause for concern. Here's a look at several common (read normal) reasons your girls may be screaming out, and how to give them some much-needed TLC.
You're PMSing
The most common cause of breast pain is a change in hormones that comes along with your period. This normal body response to shifts in estrogen typically manifests in swelling and tenderness on the day before your period begins and the first day of your flow, says Taraneh Shirazian, M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. This type of boob soreness is called cyclic pain, since it's related to your menstrual cycle. The good news: It should go away when your period ends. Birth control pills can help, says Shirazian, since they prevent ovulation and keep estrogen levels stable. And if you'd rather the skip the OTC pain reliever, primrose oil supplements may also ease soreness, she says.

5 Signs Your Appendix Is About To Burst
5 Signs Your Appendix Is About To Burst
Most people are pretty familiar with run-of-the-mill tummy troubles like constipation and diarrhea. You've probably also had the displeasure of experiencing food poisoning or a stomach virus at least once or twice in your life. While appendicitis is much less common, about 5 percent of the population eventually ends up with it, and if you fall into that unlucky group, you'll need to figure it out as soon as possible. "If it is not treated, your appendix can rupture, which can be life-threatening," says Jennifer Caudle, D.O., a board-certified family physician and assistant professor at Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Not every case of appendicitis will lead to the organ bursting, but the longer the condition goes unchecked, the greater the risk. Here are some warning signs that warrant a call to your doc or maybe even a trip to the ER.

Exactly How To Get Rid Of Each Type Of Headache ASAP
Exactly How To Get Rid Of Each Type Of Headache ASAP
Headaches come in all shapes and sizes—from a barely-there tension headache to a monster migraine that just won't quit, and finding relief can be a tricky business.
"The topic of headache and migraine management is pretty complicated, and a one-size-fits-all approach is not ideal," says Daniel Franc, M.D., neurologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. (In other words, your go-to Tylenol won't always cut it.)
To stop noggin pain in its tracks, you need to ID the type of headache you're battling—otherwise, the symptoms you're experiencing will stick around like an uninvited house guest. Here, a play-by-play of the most common headaches and the best ways to take action:
This pesky headache is the most common of the bunch and presents as pressure or a tightening sensation, typically invading the head, scalp, or neck. "Tension headaches are frequently associated with stress, sitting at a desk or computer, driving, poor posture, and neck strain during sleep," says Franc. OTC pain relievers, such as
Tylenol or Motrin, are your best course of action when you just can't even, and improving your de-stressing skills can help keep future headaches at bay, says Isha Gupta, M.D., neurologist at IGEA Brain and Spine in New York. However, you shouldn't take pain relievers daily, as they can irritate your stomach (and lead to super-annoying rebound headaches), according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. If tension headaches strike more than twice a week, check in with your doc for pain relief pointers and help with your stress, says Gupta.

8 Once in a lifetime Sex Experiences Everyone Should Have
8 Once in a lifetime Sex Experiences Everyone Should Have
What exactly makes the difference between a decent hookup and one you’ll replay your whole life?
If you ask us, it has a lot to do with what happened leading up to that hot and heavy moment. Whether it's a life event, like your wedding night or the first time you got it on together, or just an aggressive P in V sesh right after a giant fight—what went down before you got busy can make sex so much more epic.
Because everyone is entitled to birthday sex—even if it's not their birthday—we pulled together a list of the eight most monumental sexual experiences ever and how to have them anytime you want.
Whether you went on your honeymoon 12 years ago, or don’t plan on going on one for another 12 years, you can create the wedding-night sex vibe by triggering your reward system, says Helen Fisher, Ph.D., an anthropologist at Rutgers University and author of The First Sex. This sends feel-good chemicals dopamine and epinephrine, the same hormones your body pumps out when you're super blissed out—like on your wedding day.
In the morning, use a ballpoint pen to write him a sexy note somewhere on his body. Try the top of his thigh (prime real estate, with minimum exposure to coworkers).
Giving him (and yourself) nine or 10 hours to see, think about, and fantasize about your note starts the percolation process.
Once you're both home, have him hold your head with both hands, tilt your head back, and gently kiss the side of your neck.
Ask him to stay away from your traditional “go-to” spots, kissing the parts of your body he usually ignores, like the inside of your elbow or your hipbone.
Now that you’re under the covers, expand your repertoire of oral sex—a nice reward in itself. Paget suggests the Kivin method: Have him lie perpendicular to your body, which allows him to stroke your clitoris with your tongue in a crosswise motion, rather than up and down.

Take a Virtual Tour Through Your Lady Parts
Take a Virtual Tour Through Your Lady Parts
Forget GPS. Some of us could benefit from a little CPS. When asked in a study to point to the clitoris on a diagram of the female genitalia, 29 percent of women and 25 percent of men were completely lost, the majority of those believing it was located "on the front wall of the vaginal canal." Nope! Considering it's the epicenter of pleasure for most women, a tutorial is in order. So lock the door, grab a hand mirror, and let's inspect your ittiest bits.
PREPUCE
Gently pull back your outer and inner vaginal lips, and up top you'll see this little hood. Like the foreskin on an uncircumcised penis, it protects your glans clitoris (your big O spot) and "retracts when you become aroused," says Lauren Streicher, M.D., an associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at
Northwestern University and author of Sex RX.
GLANS CLITORIS
Lift the prepuce and you'll meet the external part of the clitoris—and the orgasm holy grail. This pink little nub contains 8,000 supersensitive nerves. The closer it is to your vaginal opening, the higher the chances you'll get off during penetrative sex. If yours is spaced further away (we're talking a difference in millimeters), try a rear-entry position while your guy rubs your GC with a hand or a vibrator, says Streicher.
CORPUS CAVERNOSUM
These are the "legs" of the clitoris, which are connected to the glans clitoris. They're located inside your body (like a muscle), so they aren't visible or touchable from the outside. They contain erectile tissue and swell with blood when you become aroused. Unlike a schlong, however, they don't rise when you get a lady boner.

Why Hair Grows from Your Nipples and Other Inconvenient Places
Why Hair Grows from Your Nipples and Other Inconvenient Places
One day you’re lotioning up after a shower, and then you see it: a hair. Right there. On your nipple. There’s no reason to freak, though. “Our body has hair follicles and oil glands all over, including around the nipples, so there is always the potential for hair growth,” says Lance Brown, M.D., a New York dermatologist. Of the approximately 50 million hair follicles covering your body, only one-fifth of them are located on your scalp, which leaves plenty of other places for random strands to pop up.
The Most Common Places You'll Find Body Hair
In addition to your nipples, your ear lobes, chin, and belly button are three other areas that it’s pretty common for hair to sprout from. When it comes your nipples, hair generally pops up on or right outside of the areola. On your ears, we’re not talking about an old-man forest growing, but you may find a solitary coarse hair on your lobe fighting with your earring for attention. On your abdomen, you may find yourself with a more pronounced patch of hair from your navel to your pubes or a few random hairs around your belly button. Your chin, meanwhile, is one of the most common places to find stragglers.

11 Nipple Facts You Need in Your Life
11 Nipple Facts You Need in Your Life
Have you ever looked at your nipples and wondered if they're normal? It turns out, they come in all different shapes and sizes. What's more, they can bring you incredible pleasure, help feed a baby, and even tip you off to some potentially serious health problems. Seriously, they’re amazing. After reading this, we promise you’ll have newfound respect for this body part. Here, everything you need to know about your nipples.
The size of a woman’s nipples and areolas can be as wide as a half-dollar or smaller than a dime, and either way is totally normal, says Alyssa Dweck, M.D., ob-gyn in Westchester, New York and coauthor of V Is for Vagina. Gain weight or get pregnant, and they can balloon even bigger, she says.
Pale pink, brick red, dark brown: Nipple pigment has to do with a woman’s ethnic background and the hue of the rest of her skin. Just as nipple size changes when you have a baby, so does nipple color, and that shift in shade is often permanent. “It’s the result of hormone surges during pregnancy,” says Dweck.
Nipples are an erogenous zone for many women, and a 2011 study from the Journal of Sexual Medicine backs this up. Researchers using MRI imaging found that when nipples are stimulated, a pleasure center inside the brain lights up the same way it lights up after stimulation of the clitoris and vagina.
The same 2011 study that showed a link between nipple stimulation and the pleasure center of the brain also raised the possibility that nipple stimulation alone could result in orgasm, something sex researchers previously estimated that only a “small number” of women could experience.

11 Things Every Woman Should Tell Her Gyno
11 Things Every Woman Should Tell Her Gyno
There are some things that you'd barely consider telling your best friend—let alone your gynecologist. But the truth is, they've heard and seen it all. Plus, there are some things that, while embarrassing, could be really vital when it comes to taking care of your sexual and reproductive health. Here, eleven things you should definitely tell your gynecologist:
How Many Sexual Partners You’ve Had
Has it been a particularly eventful year? Tell your gyno that—even if she doesn't ask. She's not going to judge you, and this is really useful information from a medical standpoint, says ob-gyn Alyssa Dweck, M.D., coauthor of V is For Vagina. "The more information that's disclosed that seems to be relevant, the more individualized care that can be given."
If You've Had Unprotected Sex—Even Once
So you slipped up and didn't use a condom a while back, but since then you've gotten your period and haven't noticed any signs of an STD. You're in the clear, right?
Not exactly. Some STDs, like Chlamydia, are often completely symptomless, while others like HPV can lay dormant for years, says Dweck. It's your responsibility to tell your doctor if you may be at risk for these after having unprotected sex.

7 Things Your Gynecologist Won’t Tell You But Really Wants To
There are some things that are a given when it comes to your regular ob-gyn appointments: You'll probably get pee shy, the stirrups will be uncomfortable, and you'll obsess about what exactly is going through your doctor's head when she's poking around down there.
To quell your anxiety, we asked five ob-gyns to tell us what they really want us to know about our regular visits. What they revealed made us realize a few things:
They could care less about what you do with your body hair, there's very little that embarrasses them, and they only really care that you're honest. Here's exactly what they had to say.
It’s the telltale predicament you always seem to find yourself in: It’s the night before your gyno appointment, and all of a sudden it hits you—your downstairs region isn’t exactly, err, groomed. If the thought of stripping down without a clean-up drives you bonkers, go ahead and do what you have to do. Otherwise, forget about it, because your gyno doesn’t care. “You don't have to shave your legs or wax your vulva,” says Draion M. Burch, DO, a board-certified ob-gyn and sexual health advisor for Astroglide. “I'm not paying any attention to those things.”

5 Things Your Butt Is Trying To Tell You
5 Things Your Butt Is Trying To Tell You
You might not think your posterior has much to say. After all, it's mostly just sitting there, minding its own business and maybe helping to hold up your jeans. But you might be surprised by what you can learn from your derriere, from disease risk to how much you should (or shouldn't) be exercising. Here are just a few things you can glean from your rear end.
You're less likely to develop certain chronic diseases.
Got a backside with lots of padding? It might be good news for your health. One study in the International Journal of Obesity found that a higher percentage of fat in your behind is correlated with a decrease in cardiovascular and metabolic risk. It's also associated with healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Translation: A round booty may mean you have a lower risk of developing heart disease, high cholesterol, or diabetes.

11 Things Every Woman Needs To Know About Hemorrhoids
11 Things Every Woman Needs To Know About Hemorrhoids
About a month ago, at an event for health journalists, I heard a colorectal surgeon say something that nearly made my eyeballs bug out of my face. "All of us have hemorrhoids, all the time," she said.
Uh, no, nope. There's no way. All these healthy-looking people sitting comfortably on their bums around me have hemorrhoids?!
So I called her up after the event and asked her what she meant by that inflammatory (sorry) comment. Never in my life did I think I'd spend 45 minutes on the phone casually throwing around phrases like "anal canal." I also didn't know there was so much to learn about hemorrhoids. Here are the dirty details everyone should know.
Yes, it's true, we all. have. hemorrhoids.
I know, I'm horrified, too. "I love telling people that," says Alexis Grucela, MD, the colorectal surgeon who first mentioned this idea, who is also an assistant professor of surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. "It's usually so shocking to them!" Indeed. But hemorrhoids are totally normal, she explains. "They're anal tissue that gives us extra support in the anal canal," she says. Just like pelvic floor muscles help keep urine from leaking out when you, say, cough or laugh, hemorrhoid tissue does the same for stool and gas. "It's only when they become symptomatic that people start noticing them," Grucela says. "Usually, they just do their job."

The 7 Best Foods And Drinks To Fight Your Acid Reflux
The 7 Best Foods And Drinks To Fight Your Acid Reflux
Spicy foods. Fried fare. Tomato sauce. Caffeine. If you suffer from acid reflux, you probably already know exactly what not to eat or drink. But saying no all the time isn't much fun. Is there anything that you should be eating more of?
Happily, the answer is yes. Just like some foods have properties that can cause your reflux to flare up, others can help fight inflammation (like these 10 smoothie add-ins), combat uncomfortable acid, and coat your stomach with a protective barrier. Here are 7 picks worth adding to your menu.
Ginger
You might already grab the ginger when you have a bellyache. But its anti-inflammatory properties are thought to help calm acid reflux, too. Try making a soothing tea by steeping sliced fresh ginger in hot water. (Steer clear of ginger ale, though. The carbonation and sugar could both aggravate your acid reflux.)
Bananas
It's no secret that highly acidic fruits like oranges, grapefruit, or berries can aggravate reflux. But alkaline foods with a higher pH have been shown to neutralize stomach acidity and help relieve symptoms. And with a pH of 4.5-5.2, bananas are some of the most alkaline fruits out there.

A Workout to Strengthen Your Hamstrings
A Workout to Strengthen Your Hamstrings
Contrary to popular belief, stretching won’t necessarily improve hamstring flexibility and restore range of motion. If poor alignment is to blame, your hamstrings are already in an overextended position and stretching can be counterproductive, says Mike Robertson, M.S., C.S.C.S., and co-owner of Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training. The first step in finding relief, he says, is to work toward achieving proper pelvic positioning, which will alleviate tension down the back of your thighs. The second step is to strengthen your hamstrings so they can help you maintain that good alignment—while sitting, while walking, and while running.
Robertson recommends the following two-day workout. Do the warmup moves to help you get good pelvic positioning first. Then do the first two strength moves on one day and the second two on another day. If you run two or three times per week, do these workouts on your off days. If you’re running more regularly than that, do them after you run.

6 Exercises for Strong Muscles and Healthy Joints
6 Exercises for Strong Muscles and Healthy Joints
Experts agree that one of the most important things a runner can do to prevent joint pain is to incorporate regular strength work into their training routine. Strengthening exercises condition muscles, tendons, bone, and cartilage so that they can better tolerate the stress of running. The exercises here, provided by Mark Temme, P.T., a Memphis-based physical therapist who works with runners, work the muscles that support your hip, knee, and ankle joints. Temme prescribes single-leg exercises to runners because “running is simply a series of one-legged squats,” he says. “You’ve got to strengthen your legs in a way that has a functional carryover to your sport.”
He recommends doing this routine two or three times a week. Once you can do these exercises comfortably with proper form, add weight. Temme says that runners should work up to being able to do six to eight repetitions with a weight that is heavy enough so that the last few repetitions in a set are difficult. This helps mimic the stress load placed on the body while running.

3 Things Your Pubic Hair Says About You
3 Things Your Pubic Hair Says About You
Waxing, trimming, shaving, choosing to go au natural—no matter what you do with your pubic hair, one thing is true: we all have opinions on what our hair down under should look like. The obsession has sparked numerous myths and insecurities about the best way to groom.
But have you ever stopped to wonder what your pubic hair says about your health? We did, so we talked to top gynecologists to get the answer.
You're getting older.
OK, so maybe this isn't something you need your pubic hair to tell you, but you can expect your pubes to change as you age, especially once you hit menopause. "After menopause there's a decrease in regrowth of overall body hair," says Raquel Dardik, MD, gynecologist at the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women's Health at NYU Langone Medical Center. And that includes your pubic hair. It won't just thin as you age, either. Just like the hair on your head, your pubic hair will start to gray, according to Dardik. "It's a normal aging process," she says.

Stem Cell Therapy
Stem Cell Therapy
What is it? Stem cells are immature cells that have the ability to grow into many different types of cells. In sports medicine, stem cells are harvested and then injected into an injured area, says Jonathan Finnoff, D.O., professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic and Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center in Minneapolis. While PRP therapy stimulates the healing process of tissue that is already there, stem cells may create new tissue. This is why researchers and physicians think this therapy may help joint injuries caused by worn-out cartilage; in cell cultures, stem cells can grow new cartilage, and if this can happen in a joint, it may prevent the need for a joint replacement. Bone marrow is generally harvested from the hip using an incision and specialized needle capable of penetrating bone. Then, similar to PRP therapy, the bone marrow is centrifuged to separate the stem cells and platelets, which are injected, under ultrasound guidance, into the injured area.

How to Make Your Hair Silky and Shiny with Vinegar
How to Make Your Hair Silky and Shiny with Vinegar
Centuries ago, people discovered that vinegar makes hair look silky and shiny. A simple mixture of vinegar and water smooths the hair cuticle and cleanses buildup. Using white or apple cider vinegar after shampooing your hair is an excellent way to revitalize its texture.
Using a Simple Rinse
Mix one part vinegar and one part water. Plain vinegar is too strong to use on hair, so it's important to dilute it with water first. One-fourth cup of vinegar and one-fourth cup of water should be enough for a single hair rinse.
Either distilled white vinegar or apple cider vinegar work well here. Many prefer using apple cider vinegar on the body because the smell is less intense.
If your hair is quite oily, you can add an extra tablespoon of vinegar. If your hair is dry or you tend to have dandruff, scale back the amount of vinegar by a tablespoon.

80% OF HEART ATTACKS COULD BE AVOIDED IF EVERYONE DID THESE 5 EASY THINGS
Heart disease claims the lives of about 1 million Americans every year, making it the leading cause of death for both men and women. The most common form of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to a heart attack. This year alone, 920,000 Americans will have a heart attack, and close to half of them will occur suddenly without any prior warning signs.
A heart attack occurs when blood flow to a part of your heart becomes blocked. This is often the result of plaque build-up inside your arteries (atherosclerosis), which may rupture and form a blood clot that blocks blood flow.
If the blockage isn’t cleared quickly, a portion of your heart muscle will begin to die and be replaced with scar tissue, which can cause severe problems in the future.
For instance, a previous heart attack (especially if a large area of your heart was damaged) is a risk factor for sudden cardiac arrest, which is caused by abnormal heart rhythms and can be fatal.

How To Understand Circumcision
How To Understand Circumcision
Circumcision among males dates back to as early as the time of ancient Egypt where, historians attest, the oldest recorded evidence of circumcision was found.
Male circumcision is a process in which the foreskin from the penis is cut. The word circumcision actually originates from the Latin words ‘circum' (around) and "cadere" (to cut). It is believed to have started as a religious ritual in which a young boy's passage from boyhood to manhood was celebrated through circumcision, which was originally regarded as a way of boosting his virility and increasing his appeal to women. Other than those beliefs, circumcision was also considered as a way to temper a boy's sexual desire especially during his adolescent stage.
